Response to Soliders Without Swords

The way I felt about seeing the first half of the movie in class titled Soldiers Without Swords made me appreciate the strength that African-American community held during the hardships that were thrown at them during the 19Th century of America still not giving them equal opportunities that were suppose to be giving. My admiration began when I noticed that even though the community knew they didn't have a voice they thought of other means that helped them get their point across which also became a major accomplishment for the community. The accomplishment that became so notable for the community that inspired many to come and those after was the newspaper, but this wasn't just any old newspaper it was the "black newspaper". This paper created the voice they were hoping to gain since things had changed legally.
The strength that it bought to the community made changes many people started to gain the urge to read as well as make their children and grandchildren read, this also created a whole new field of jobs for many black people. Much of the community also took an interest in this work and wanted to be journalist, columnist, photographers and editors. Hopefully the second half also has a huge impact as the first did.

BLOG #1: MEDIA AND MYSELF

Hello everyone my name is Anansa Carthen. I'm currently a communting Junior attending Suny Old Westbury. I'm seeking a degree in the double major of Media and Communication and American Studies and a minor in Marketing. I'm a 20 year old female born and raised in Brooklyn, New York with my mother and my older sister. My background is of African American and Kittian descent. My father is from the little island of St.Kitts and Nevis which known as "Suga City". He lives here with my three sisters and younger brother and the rest of my loving family. I currently hold the position of Vice President of my chapter of my sorority which is Alpha Kappa Alpha.

A few things about myself that I would like to share with the class about myself is my favorite color is purple and has been since I can remember due to the cartoon Barney. I love to shop, especially at my favorite clothing stores which are Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, Forever 21, Marshalls and T.J Maxx. I'm a virgo with the birthday of September 2, 1989. My top hobbies are traveling, listening to music, cooking, spending time with my friends and family, and laughing until my stomach hurts as well s being silly and making my friends and family laugh when I'm not being shy.
I choose the field of Media because I enjoy using it in my everyday life to entertain me as well as the feeling that I receive when I hear breaking news or a world premiere of a new song from my favorite music artist. This feeling that I gain makes made me realize that everyone needs to experience this because it can make a difference to them from having a life and death situation or making someone cheer up if their sadden by a family members death. As I further experience these emotions from the media of the radio it made want to become the C.E.O. of my own radio station that would offer job opportunities and internships to young females in the community because they aren't many opportunities taken by females in this field.
Media has also played major role in my life because its something that I seek information that is important to me everyday. I usually receive my information on a daily basis through the media of a text message, phone call, Internet, and the news but its usually through the usage of text messages and Internet because those are used the most by me. The usage of these media's has had major influence on the choices I make for myself from my career goal of wanting to own my own radio station to shopping online because the store may not have my size or I might need few tips on where to get a better bargain on the new styles of the season. As well s learning useful information as to searching websites for my text books for class because they are cheaper then the book store.
